Best Zigbee Gateway on the market - for now! UZG-01 by ZigStar
Another wonderful video, my bearded compadre! I recently set up an irrigation timer both out of the box and assembled from individual parts and I have to say, this device would be admittedly cheaper (if you already have the hub for it). Also, mine does not meter the water--a challenge I may tackle later because that's a really useful feature. That's a pretty neat little water valve. I'd like to add a little "inside" info about these devices in general in case anyone is thinking of different use cases: If you want to use this on a rain barrel or other water source with no pressure, you would need to add a significantly powerful water pump capable of holding the water pressure high. The valves used in these sort of devices are diaphragm valves which require water pressure to operate--usually a minimum of 7-10 PSI (0.5-0.7 Bar) and nominally ~50 PSI (3-3.5 Bar). There are electronic ball valves for that sort of use, but I've not seen any smart ones, so you'd have to improvise a bit if you wanted to go that route. Just thought I'd drop a little something to contribute to the conversation. It's always a pleasure seeing what you're getting into. Thanks for the video!
Puno ti hvala, za tvoj Video!
Nema na čemu! Hvala na komentaru!!!
Great info. It would be interesting to see how it works paired with some more complex integration for HA such as HAsmartirrigation or simlar to automate garden watering .
I've looked at HA Smart Irrigation component and it shouldn't be the problem. But we would still need to create automation to be able to use data from SIrrigation component for watering everything.
Another good way to accomplish this would be to just use Tasker and program it to play a sound when a specific notification is sent from home assistant
Tasker is nice app for those things, but I try to avoid external apps as much as I can.
I could do either one of these, but it looks like its only available on their US shop.
Just checked and it's available in their shop (that's not US shop) snd also all Amazon Sonoff shops (checked US, DE, UK) - but price on Amazon is much higher.
I would like to use this on roof top to clean solar panels. Is it rain proof?
It's only IP55 rated.
I have no garden but I wonder if this could be used in a dishwasher/washing machine paired with a water leak sensor just to shut off the water if a leak happens. That would be interesting
It could. But also, there is already ready-made device for that from IKEA. Still not available worldwide, but it is designed just for those machines and they work in such a way that they stop water flowing to those machined after specific time.
@@BeardedTinker oh, I didn't know! That's great, thanks! I'll look it up.
I hate my wifi valves 😮💨 Will give one of these a try and see if it works out better. It's so hot 🥵, I'll be watering non-stop pretty soon and just leave the valve open forever and not even need a smart valve 😓
I know the feeling. I use around 15-16l from my AC daily to just water plants on my balcony :D
ordered one today as well. i hope that we see all the options in ZHA soon
My guess is very soon - it usually takes few weeks for someone to push custom quirks for new devices.
You can always test it in the shower 😂
Tried, but problem with fittings :D
@@BeardedTinker lol
why not use if and then or choose to use a single automation?
Yes, that's doable. But if you go for "cycles" you don't need that. You can use conditions still to check if there is any rain on radar.
@@BeardedTinker and you can also use soil humidity (cheap Chinese one) too as a condition/tirgger.
Yes, that's right, that makes things even smarter than just using schedule or weather state.
Exactly what I needed, Thanks!
Thank you very very much :)
LOL, I just installed new PVC lines from my wife's garden to the rain barrels where I have a High output garden pump in one. I used a spare Sonoff"Mini Smart Light Switch" that has the 120VAC and pump wired into it and a "Flow" sensor. Works good! This would be so much easier both hardware and programming. I guess I need to re-do this again. My wife thinks I am crazy.... she's probably correct. I finished wiring this in yesterday. Great Video!
I know the feeling. How many times I've finished something than next day better way to do it just pops up somewhere :) But if this works, keep it and enjoy fruit of your labour!!!
@@BeardedTinker Nope, I still need to connect the flow sensor to a Pico W and get the data back to HA. After I got off your video, about 30 seconds went by and I got on line and ordered one. Getting lazy, all my 38 HA devices are ZigBee so it was a no brain er for me. Thanks
Looking forward to hear how it all works together - BTW not sure if you've seen HA Smart Irrigation component, it may be of a use to you.
@@BeardedTinker Thanks, I just looked at it and it looks interesting. Will have to dig deeper into the program.
Not related to the video however I recently found a video "Apple Air Tags in Home Assistant - Proxmox Guide 2024" which allows you to see the Airtag location directly in HomeAssistant although it is in German. Would love to see an English video about it but of course I do not know if you have iPhone/iPad with Airtag to make it happen :)
Have iPhone but not Airtag... :) But that didn't stop me in past :) Will try to get one.
@@BeardedTinker Awesome! Looking forward to it :)
Awesome explanation video, might think about buying one :)
Glad you liked it - thanks for the comment!!!!
just in time, ordered one.
Hope you'll be satisfied with it!!!
@@BeardedTinker I'll be using it as a main feed control as I already have two automated zones on timers. That way if it's raining, I can delay the watering. I wish there were more entities under ZHA.
Интересно. Надо пробовать. А если например в телефоне всегда выключен звук, как включить звук уведомления?
There are some notification channels (such as alert/critical) that will always play sound, no matter if muted. You should check companion app documentation for available options.
@@BeardedTinker Спасибо
Theres proibably an easier way, but I managed to created some sensors that extract the last notification by package name so that you don't just have the very last notification to use. Very useful. Thanks!
Great tip! I showed just very very basic example, but yeah, this is really good use for it.
I have a oneplus and the clock is not the same as vanilla android. It worked when i downloaded the Google clock on playstore. But i want to use the normal clock. Someone know how to find what package name my oneplus clock is using? Edit: I found it. In playstore on web, the url on oneplus clock ends with com.oneplus.deskclock . Changed the "intent_package_name: com.oneplus.deskclock" and it worked :)
Sorry for a later reply - but yes. You could also got in companion app and check there in list of notification from apps (I showed that i previous video on how to get notifications from phone to HA).
Loved the iPhone joke ahaha, so true though
:D I just had to
Off topic question: what is in your HACS view? I've not seen dashboards with HACS in the view tabs, only the left nav.
Ohh, nothing really. When I do videos on HACS integrations, I pop everything there (easier to sort and found later). Just a typical dashboard filled with whatever I experiment with from HACS.
As always... Another great video 😊
Thank you so much 😀
@beardedtinker the Watermark feature is only for the Reolink logo to be displayed or not. The camera name and date/time can stay turned on even with the Watermark turned off. The nice thing with the Reolink cameras is they allow you to not only have your date/time and camera info displayed, but you can also choose the location for the info so it doesn’t cover an area that you want to be able to see. It is also nice that they can be hidden as well. Nice work by Reolink on this feature!
Yes, correct - watermark is for watermark and yes, you can also move/customise date/time/name of the camera.
On iPhone you can send a notification that causes an alert sound. It's how I find my wife's phone about once a week. action: - service: notify.mobile_app_<your_device_id_here> data: title: "Wake up!" message: "The house is on fire and the cat's stuck in the dryer!" data: push: sound: name: "default" critical: 1 volume: 1.0
The "equivalent" for the iPhones would be setting up shortcuts where several things can trigger events and can send commands through home assistant. It's quite a bit of a workaround, but it is possible.
I've been using this for a while for a few things. Getting the notification from my smart dryer and washing machine into HA to announce that washing or drying has finished. For Chipolo Bluetooth trackers to tell me I may have left whatever it's attached to behind via TTS to phone. Could also use it for notification of Amazon delivery when it's a few stops away. I'm sure there are plenty of other uses I haven't thought of yet too.
Yet another great video. I keep learning more and more. Thank you very much.
Thanks for this, just tried it on a Oneplus Nord and the message even gets past the 'silent' slider on the side of the phone when locked.
Ok you said iphone is superior to android, seeya. ;-)
Hi and thank you again for this video! Any chance to see a Bubble Card 2 video as well in the future? There are too many new features and it seems that nobody has covered it yet 🤞
You can play whatever sound you like for many notifications (copy the sound of your choice to your phone, or use built in sounds). You have to define the notification channel, then in Android setting for home assistant notifcations you can define a specific sound for each channel. Like how you can define a different notification sound for each message Eg: data: channel: Doorbell
I was just coming to post this. In addition to what you stated, a lot of phones will also let you bypass do not disturb and have vibrations and flashlight blinking.
Just what I needed. I set up some push notifications a couple of weeks ago for when my elderly mother triggers an event on any of the Nest mini hubs I have set up around her home.
Definitely see a use for water or smoke detection alerts. Thanks
love your videos, and thanks for making them. What i have done for getting my attention for important events from Home Assistant, I use the channel option for Android phones. What this does is you send a notification to your phone with a specific channel name, for example DoorBell. this will intern add another notification categories option in your Home Assistant companion app. You then can select a unique sound for when some one presses the door bell. When you make your automation under event data for the notification to your phone, your would ad channel DoorBell in the data fileld All this info is in the companion app docs. Sorry for running on so much and probably confusing the world what i said. Just trying to make some contribution. I wish more people what spend some time on information and ideas on the companion app
great! Thank you...
If notifications to your Android phone are slow to arrive, add the "ttl: 0" and "priority: high" parameters to the data field of the notification data: tts_text: "your message" ttl:0 priority: high
That seems to work on my A54 thanks, except there is a missing space in your code if you copy and paste, so it needs to be ttl: 0 (for anyone else trying it)
Nice tip! Thanks!!!
Thank you very much for the tip. Should there be a space after ttl: ? i.e. ttl: 0

@@BeardedTinker Ok, Its automation on steroids :)
Thank you! I also have too many "plain" notifications on my phone, which go unnoticed. I'll be setting these up for the home alarm, smoke alarm and water leak notifications. Maybe even for when my wife is getting close to home, so I can wrap up my tinkering ;-)
I'll need to implement the last one :)
I have a use case for this. I have a chrome website i'd like to open at a certain time while working. so if i unlock my phone, it can be open and ready for me. I'm going to mess around with this a bit more. great video and information!
Looks like my comment got deleted - thanks YT - but yeah, that shouldn't be that hard to do, to open browser of your choice and insert URL for the web page!
You are able to create CRITICAL notifications to IOS Devices, and you are able to send sound and notices for "Important things with new Iphones" The messages are critical and they will stay on you screen until they are dismissed. But if you have a iWatch on only the default sound comes through to it. You can control how loud the message will be. The sound have to be within the Companion App and there is a way to download your own sound too. Sample Code: service: notify.mobile_app_iphone data: message: Your Roommate has arrived title: Front Door data: push: sound: name: "US-EN-Morgan-Freeman-Roommate-Is-Arriving.wav" critical: 1 volume: .75 <---- 75% Volume This is a great way to make sure your truly Critical Notices are received... like water leakage, fire, or something that you cannot automatically control from HA. Hope this helps someone :)
Great tip! Thanks for this. Will try it in a bit.
Superior 🤣🤣
😉
subs to subs ahaha
It’s a shame there is no way to trigger the alarm, so if one goes off, all can go off. This is a feature most modern smoke alarms have even if they aren’t smart devices. A bit of an oversight from the manufacturer I’d say. Deal breaker for me.
Yeah, that is unfortunate...
I have a Sensecap M2 Multiplatform LoRAWAN hub. It has the open source chirpstack V4 built in, which sends out MQTT messages. Still trying to figure the message out though. My only device till today was a Vision AI that says if a person is present currently, so I’ve not made this easy. Have a GPS tracker that arrived today. Will need to add it to chirpstack but chirpstack displays badly on small screens. In theory you just connect the LoRAWAN Hub via MQTT to Home Assistant, so you don’t really need extra work done. To save energy most of the devices are sensors and only connect to LoRaWAN intermittently but I’ve seen description of other “class” that seem suitable for effectors. Edited to add: pretty sure The Things Network has a cloud based MQTT client so you could connect it that way if you don’t mind the cloud.
The second one works fine even when my phone is off.
It does, but it may be delayed if you're not home (on home network), depending how things are set - but than again, it works for me without an issue.
@@BeardedTinker works great with tailscale connecting me back home.
Like the intro!
Thank you!!!
As for Dishwaster I think better to link to power use, but I'm not sure how to do
You can check here my automation I have on that - start and end: github.com/BeardedTinker/Home-Assistant_Config/tree/master/automations/utilities I use power monitoring to figure when it starts and finishes plus also track number of pods in stock (as we know how many times it started).
These type of notifications are good for urgent or emergency notifications. Some alerts you don't want, but for those important alerts, this is good. It's a pity iPhones are still so locked down and not able to do the same things, but a cheap android device could be employed to alert, even if your main driver is an iPhone.
I really understand why Apple did it that way, but it's shame as it feels inferior if you want to customise things. Of course 99.9% of users will not need it.
I see that the EU is planning to ban certain features of the new "Apple Intelligence" in the EU. As I use the superior and freedom loving Android and do not live in the EU, fortunately I won't be affected!
First, I enjoy your videos and thank you. I'm not an expert myself at any of these apps I use, including HA. Yet. Some special Androids, Samsung for example, if one ui5 or above, has modes and routines and can be useful. If words in a push are detected, it reads me the push out loud in my Bluetooth hearing aids. Samsung owners check that. Also, I've set alarms pre home assistant green, with Tasker, a very powerful phone tool. Along with plugins such as auto notification plugin. Technical though it is. Tinkering in HA as well. For instance, if my Wyze cams or any cam, detected a person between certain hours at night, sends notification, auto notification intercepts and it plays a siren sound on my phone for say 20 seconds and forwards it's also to my connected Bluetooth speaker to wake me up. Tasker also has a home assistant connection of some sort I haven't messed with much. See expert part above.😅 As time allows I will play with that as well. So much technology and so little time and expertise. To many pots on my stove lol.
I have Android as my main phone, but I also have iPhone, more for testing and HomeKit than real life use :)
Thank you for this - really great ideas and use cases. I've tested Tasker some time ago, but never ended using it. But as you say, I also like to make a lot of parallel cooking with too many pots on the stove - hopefully something ends up go at the end ;)
Looks great, I wounder if you could just use the cable in a U shape pattern to keep it submerged in water and test loss of water that way? for example, stick it in my Roborock s7 ultra clean water tank to get alerted when its under half empty....
Didn't try but it shouldn't be a problem to set up. One note - it takes some time for cable to dry, just take that into account. Also, I'm not sure of the impact of this on battery life - it may be 0 or a lot.
